Dr Andrew Nguyen

Dr Andrew Nguyen is an infectious diseases physician currently practising in Geraldton, WA at St John of God Geraldton Hospital, directly servicing the Midwest and Gascoyne region providing local clinical education and researching to improve rural health.

Raised in Queensland, Andrew began his journey in Infectious Diseases with a Bachelor of Science in microbiology from the University of Queensland, followed by a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery from the Australian National University where he gained experience working across Hospital Santo Tomas in Panama, the World Health Organization Health Actions in Crises Unit in Switzerland, and in leading a developmental project to improve sanitation and health education against communicable diseases in Fiji. He completed further training in applied epidemiology while completing junior clinical training across rural and metropolitan Queensland.

In 2016-17, Andrew was awarded a global Rotary scholarship to complete a Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and a Master of Science in Tropical Medicine and International Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Upon being awarded a Chadwick Fellowship, he initiated an international project on measles surveillance in the Lao People's Democratic Republic to inform measles elimination efforts in the Asia Pacific. Andrew returned to Australia to serve rural communities in Queensland before completing his specialty training across Queensland and New South Wales, including Cairns Hospital, Sunshine Coast University Hospital, and Westmead Hospital. He also completed a Pacific Regional Infectious Diseases Association diploma in medical microbiology and is a s100 prescriber for Hepatitis B and HIV.

In addition to his clinical experience, Andrew has a strong interest in research and clinical education, having presented at various conferences across Australasia and Europe. He is a current lecturer and research fellow with the WA Centre for Rural Health, completing further advanced training in public health, and is a senior lecturer with the University of Queensland Rural Clinical School. Andrew also serves as an editor-in-chief at StatPearls for Infectious Diseases and is a current representative of the Australasian Society of Infectious Diseases Zoonoses Special Interest Group. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his young family exploring new destinations, cultures and food.
